Looking for a PiVPN alternative? What changed and what to use

PiVPN turned many Raspberry Pis into VPN servers. In 2024 its maintainer announced the end of active development, and many people are asking what to use now. Here is what happened and how it compares with MiVPN, honestly.

What PiVPN is

PiVPN is a free tool that installs a VPN server on a Raspberry Pi or a Linux computer. You use it by typing commands, and for each phone or laptop it creates a file or a QR code that you load into a VPN app.

What happened to it

In April 2024 the project published what it announced as the final version, explaining that VPNs had become much easier to set up. Shortly afterwards, its maintainer announced that PiVPN would still be looked after, but only when possible.

If you already use it, it keeps working. But it no longer gets new features, so it is worth knowing the alternatives.

What PiVPN leaves to you

  • Opening a port on your router by hand.
  • Having your own public IP: if your internet provider shares one IP between several customers (CGNAT), it does not work. See how to know if that is your case.
  • Preparing a file or QR code for each device, and cancelling it if you lose one.
  • Keeping everything updated yourself.

When PiVPN is still a good choice

  • You want something completely free and open source, with no account anywhere.
  • It already works for you and you are comfortable typing commands.
  • You need OpenVPN for a network that blocks other VPNs. See WireGuard vs OpenVPN.

Moving from PiVPN to MiVPN

  1. Install MiVPN Server on the same Raspberry Pi or another one, following our Raspberry Pi guide.
  2. Choose another port during setup, or remove PiVPN first: both use the same one by default.
  3. Install the MiVPN app on your devices and sign in. That is it.

Your own VPN server, free to start

Frequently asked questions

Is it still safe to use PiVPN?

The VPN it installs is still kept up to date, and PiVPN only sets it up. Keep your system updated and remember that PiVPN itself is no longer actively developed.

Can PiVPN and MiVPN run on the same Raspberry Pi?

Yes, as long as each one uses a different port.

Do I need my own public IP for MiVPN?

No. If your provider shares your IP with other customers, the paid plans include a relay.

Do I have to set up my phones again?

Yes, but it takes a minute: install the MiVPN app and sign in. No files or QR codes.
